The Origins of
Northern Thai Tea Plantations
The exploration and plantation of tea (based on the age-old mieng)
in Thailand began for the first time in 1941 by a pioneering man,
Mr. Prasit Poomchusri an outstanding Chiang Mai farmer and the founder
of Raming Tea Co., Ltd. Prasit was inspired to plant northern tea
after he read the journal ‘All about Tea’ in the Tea and Coffee Trade
Journal which mentioned Lanna as one of the world’s original tea resources.

Assam Tea
From his exploration, he discovered that teas found on high mountains
in Mae Taeng District of Chiang Mai grow wild on the mountain
and belong to the same variety as the Assam teas that are planted
in India and Sri Lanka. This kind of tea is fermented to become
chewing tea leaves (mieng) which are favoured by the elderly.
The tea for drinking has been produced in Thailand since then.
